The alleged shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was a member of a local gun club and used a legally purchased firearm, leaving the Bethel Park community in shock. FBI agents are meticulously searching Crooks’s hometown as the motive behind his attempt to assassinate Donald Trump at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally remains elusive. Trump
Crooks’s phone was accessed by the FBI, but initial analysis hasn’t revealed his reasons for the attack. Crooks, who was quickly killed by Secret Service agents, injured Trump, killed one rally-goer, and wounded two others. This incident has exacerbated political tensions and fears of violence and unrest in the U.S.
The FBI is investigating if Crooks was a politically motivated domestic violent extremist. The investigation, which suggests Crooks acted alone, continues with no current public safety concerns. Nearly 100 interviews have been conducted with law enforcement, event attendees, and witnesses from the Big Butler Fairgrounds.
Crooks, 20, had training at the local Clairton Sportsmen’s Club, which condemned the violence but didn’t disclose his training details. Club members continued firing at targets, unaware of Crooks’s capability of making a shot from 130 yards away.
A local firearms instructor noted that Crooks used an AR-15-style rifle, capable of accurate shots over 700 yards. Despite this, Crooks’s aim was inexperienced, likely due to being rushed. Crooks purchased 50 rounds of ammunition at a local gun shop hours before the rally and another 50 rounds the morning of the shooting. Explosives, including grenades, were found in Crooks’s car, prompting the involvement of the Allegheny County bomb squad.
Butler Sheriff Michael Slupe confirmed an armed officer had encountered Crooks before the shooting but wisely withdrew when Crooks turned towards him.
In Bethel Park, where Crooks lived with his mother and worked in a nursing home kitchen, residents are puzzled over his motives. School friends described him as an isolated student excelling in math but socially struggling. Despite some conservative leanings, his political views and mental state before the attack remain unclear due to his minimal online presence.
