When NME interviewed RM before the release of his debut solo album *Indigo* in 2022, he was in a reflective mood, pondering what his life might have been like if he’d chosen a different path and grappling with his identity at 29 after spending his entire adult life in varying levels of superstardom. “I felt like if there’s an artwork of my 29[th year], it should be named ‘Untitled’, because nothing is decided,” he said. “I don’t know what to do right now – I just made some album and this is me. I’m just figuring it out.”

This feeling continues in his second solo album, *Right Place, Wrong Person*. While *Indigo* began to untangle the web of RM’s life, exploring his identity and future direction, this new record picks up where the unravelled threads are piling up, forming chaotic new mazes. Sometimes things must get messier before they can be cleared up, and here, we’re thrown into the storm of confusion and feeling out of place.
The theme of right and wrong, and being caught between them, runs throughout the album. “Right people in wrong place,” RM mutters in a low, hypnotic voice, the line becoming a mantra amidst ominous synths and bass. A track later, on “Nuts,” he suggests, “I can make this right place for you” – a kind gesture on the surface, but one that hints at underlying issues.
Waiting for perfection can be a long wait for a satisfaction that never comes. RM seems to understand this in the album’s second half, embracing life’s imperfections. On the shoegazey “Heaven,” he invites someone to “come ruin my vibe,” confident he’ll be fine even if they do.
“LOST!” takes pleasure in the uncertainty of life and finding new experiences. “I’m goddamn lost,” RM sings cheerfully over a bouncy bassline. “I never been to club before / I hit the club / I never felt so free before.” Later, he looks “up in the sky / I see silver cloud,” imagery that could signify a potential downpour or a silver lining.
The final line of *Right Place, Wrong Person* confirms that while RM may not have all the answers, he’s ready to accept that the boundary between right and wrong is blurred. “You are my pain, divine, divine,” he shares on “Come Back To Me,” acknowledging that life’s negative experiences can be as beautiful as the positive ones.
Throughout the album, RM takes us through a range of emotions. “Nuts,” dealing with relationship dissatisfaction, is disorienting in its shifting phases. RM vents his anger at critics on “Out Of Love”: “All you strangers, you did think you can please me?” he sneers. “Smoking kills, I know / It’s my fucking business / You bitches stop, don’t talk shit.”
“Groin” is similarly acerbic but more lighthearted. “Get your ass outta trunk / Your face, I’m like, ‘Fuck, bitch!’” he chants, gleeful in his scorn. Conversely, “ㅠㅠ (Credit Roll)” is filled with gratitude, and “Domodachi” is an ode to friendship. “We’re just here for a good time every day,” guest rapper Little Simz illustrates on the latter. “I’ve got my broski’s back til the end / You can’t put one hand on my friend.”
Other features on the album include jazz duo DOMi & JD BECK on “? (Interlude)” and Moses Sumney’s sonorous voice on “Around The World In A Day.” At its core, *Right Place, Wrong Person* is a collaborative effort. RM gathered a group of musicians led by Balming Tiger’s creative director San Yawn, including some of South Korea’s most exciting artists, from Silica Gel’s Kim Hanjoo to solo artist Marldn, singer and producer Mokyo, and HYUKOH’s OHHYUK.
